By using this methodology, voids and inconsistencies in the definition and use of information within business processes can be reviewed for accuracy and resolution.
If you think of geographical maps, they are an excellent way to share information between people and systems that have never had the knowledge prior. For instance if I have never been to Denver, I could pickup a map and go from the airport to my hotel with little problem. The map is a mechanism for transferring knowledge. Roads, interstates, airports, and landmarks are defined by a series of symbols that represent these different concepts. An airplane symbol is a standard symbol for an airport. Maps are created to specific methodologies as well. A map or chart of a harbor shows the depth of the water in various places normally at mean low tide. The map is required to provide that context for the user to interpret the information correctly. There can be a big difference between mean low tide and mean high tide. Misunderstanding of the chart can lead to a boating accident.
Business Maps are a specific type of map for ensuring business information integrity. The map includes symbols; a diamond is a relationship between different levels. The map also has to establish a context. This is accomplished by defining a business requirement, a main activity, and a purpose as defined in the methodology. A business map has certain rules that must be followed as well. Lack of a relationship can clearly be seen on the map through the use of a particular symbol. Business Maps just like geographical maps can come in many different formats and each can provide information in a different manner.
