Windows XP Replacement Delayed

Windows XP Replacement Delayed

Alexander Muse , March 21, 2006

Microsoft announced that Windows Vista will be delayed until 2007 (January target release). Here are the details:

The software maker said it will still wrap up development of the operating system this year and make it available to volume licensing customers in November. However, Microsoft said that a delay of a few weeks in Vista’s schedule meant that some PC makers would be able to launch this year and others would not. As a result, Windows chief Jim Allchin said the company is delaying the broad launch of the product until January.

New IE7 Build Available

New IE7 Build Available

Alexander Muse , March 20, 2006

Build 5335 of IE7 is available: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/. This build is for Windows XP Service Pack 2 and shows the current state of IE7.

Uninstallation

When installing it, you’ll want to uninstall your previous IE7 builds. To uninstall an IE7 build:

  • Click “Start,” and then click “Control Panel.”
  • Click “Add or Remove Programs.”
  • Check “Show Updates” at the top of the dialog box.
  • Scroll down the list to “Windows XP – Software Updates,” select “Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview,” and then click “Change/Remove.”

If “Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview” does not exist, run %windir%\$NtUninstallie7b2pmx$\spuninst\spuninst.exe (where %windir% is your home Windows directory). You will need to have “view hidden folders” enabled.

In the rare circumstances where you cannot find that directory and IE7 is not listed in the Control Panel, IE7 setup automatically creates a system restore point before making any changes. Use System Restore to restore your computer back to your original install point. This is not 100% effective so please back up important documents prior to using System Restore.

Windows XP for DummiesHave you ever seen those [insert subject] for Dummies books? Of course you have. Anyway, I stumbled across a table full of them at Barns and Noble yesterday. Did you know that the Windows XP for Dummies book was almost twice as thick as the Piano for Dummies, Nanotechnology for Dummies books and Rocket Science for Dummies?Could Windows XP be twice as complicated as nanotechnology? Is it easier to learn piano than to use Windows XP? Who knew?

Next time we are struggling to support your desktop computer just remember – it is harder than rocket science.
