Hard Drive Disposal
Alexander Muse , November 27, 2006

Throwing out or donating that old PC? Don’t reformat the drive and assume your data is gone. You need to actually destroy the hard drive if the data is sensitive. You don’t have to use an expensive service (they are getting cheap - under $15 for formatting and shredding), you can use a hammer like I did this weekend and that will likely do the trick. The NSA could likely get some data off of my old drive, but I suspect that your local crook will move on to the next drive.
