Previously we indicated that the Department of Homeland Security had issued a patch warning for Windows 2000. Patched systems should now be safe. The worm did not actually spread due to the quick action of most companies. If you are running Windows 2000 systems check to make sure your IT support person installed MS06-040 (if they didn’t call Scott at 214.550.2010).

Dell is the victim of the largest safety recall in the history of consumer electronics having to recall 4,100,000 batteries.

The batteries were sold between April 2004 and July 18, 2006. The recall is a result of several laptop fires such as this one:

Dell has been bedeviled by reports of burning laptops in recent months. In June, a Dell notebook burst into flames during a conference in a hotel in Osaka, Japan. In July, firefighters in Vernon Hills, Ill., were called to the office of Tetra Pak, the food processing and packaging company, to extinguish a notebook fire hot enough to burn the desk beneath it.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is looking out for your safety. They are recommending that users apply Microsoft’s MS06-040 patch as quickly as possible.

According to CNET: “Users are encouraged to avoid delay in applying this security patch,” the Department of Homeland Security said in the statement. The patch fixes a serious flaw that, if exploited, could enable an attacker to remotely take complete control of an affected system, the agency said.
